I teach 30 low income first graders in an urban school district. My school has a high rate of free or reduced lunch and breakfast. In addition, it is difficult to get new supplies because my school district is in a very tight financial situation.
It is hard to teach science because the supplies I have are old or missing. For example, I am requesting a set of measuring cups because I can't seem to put together a complete set of measuring cups with the current supplies in my room. It is very hard to follow the science curriculum when the supplies are not available for students to use and experiment with. My students have benefited from getting magnets from generous donors through donorschoose.org and they just smile and have a great time experimenting with any new supplies I can get into the classroom. Since these supplies are new, I teach students about being responsible and how to take care of supplies. I would also use these supplies not just with my current first graders, but these new supplies would be kept in my room for future first graders to use. In addition, I would let other teachers in my area use these supplies if they promise to return them in good condition.
My students need various science supplies including a demonstration thermometer, sets of liquid measuring supplies and graduated cylinders and beakers.
The resources I am requesting will help with various science and math curriculum units. In addition, these supplies could be used in language arts assignments as a writing prompt. But, mostly, these supplies will help enhance the learning of science and the concepts related to various parts of the science curriculum. Also, there is cross curricular opportunities to pair science with math lessons. The possibilities abound.
If you help fund this project, you will make some inner city first graders very grateful. They have the ability to succeed; I just need the materials to help them achieve to their highest potential. With your help, I can engage my first graders in further science exploration through the use of the resources I am asking for. I have witnessed the positive impact of getting new supplies in the room for students to use. The impact is tremendous, and you can be a part of that positive impact on young inner city first graders.
