A Literary and Historical Garden Learning Experience A Literary and Historical Garden is being created. Plants are being selected keeping in mind two criteria: the history of the rose and Lewis and Clark’s Expedition. Roses were selected that represent the major classes of roses (species, damask, gallica, alba, centifolia, etc). Roses were also selected for their literary, historical and/or biological significance. For example, Shakespeare’s Musk Rose was included because it is a rose to which Shakespeare often alludes. Because botanical discovery was one of the key goals of the Lewis and Clark expedition, it is fitting that plants from this expedition were also included. Lessons will be developed for the World History classes which show the origin of the rose from Ancient Babylon and the Egyptians to the present day. Students will learn the significance of the plant trade and particularly the economic and political significance of the production of rose attar. Students will research the various roses that are mentioned throughout history (albas, gallicas, damasks, musk, et al.), map the origins of these roses, and use digital cameras to photograph the actual roses which will be grown in the garden and create projects which display their findings. Students will create oral reports of their findings which will be recorded into the computer and organized by the teacher to create a listening walking tour through the garden. Students will use a class set of mp3 players to listen to the reports of their peers as they are guided through significant areas of the garden. Lessons will be developed for the U.S. History classes which focus on the botanical contributions of Thomas Jefferson and the botanical significance of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Students will research plants of important biological and historical significance using research materials specifically selected for this project. Students will map the expedition showing where the particular specimens originated. Students will use the digital cameras to photograph these plants in the garden and prepare projects which show their findings. Students will use the historical markers in the garden to help guide them through an understanding of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Lessons will be developed for English-12 classes which will allow the student to research the plants to which the literature alludes. Students will use the digital cameras to photograph the actual plants they have researched. Students will then summarize their findings in a narrative which will be recorded (using a digital microphone) onto a computer. In addition to their research, the student will recite and record the literary passage which contains the references to the plants. These oral recordings will be collected and assembled into a listening walking tour of the garden. Students will be directed to the plant or flower in the garden, and there, students will see the actual flower while listening to the report and a student recitation of the literary passage. Students will reflect in a follow-up activity. In addition to studying the particular flowers and plants mentioned in the literature, students will reflect on the garden as a whole. Students will read passages from literature which express the change of the seasons, a common theme in literature.
