I am a fifth grade teacher in an English Language Learning classroom. We are located in a low-income neighborhood but that doesn't mean the students' are not willing to excel.
Our major hurdle is the fact that many of my students come from single parent households. My students enjoy coming to school and they look forward to learning about the Thirteen Colonies and the Declaration of Independence. The resources I have requested would give the students a visual of what I am trying to teach them. My students need a weekly news magazine to keep up with current events in the classroom, a set of the 13 colonies bingo to give them hands on learning experiences while keeping it fun. They also need the geography skills collection supplies to help them broaden their views on the world and how much it has grown and continues to grow. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, there are no supplies available. Parents just cannot afford to "splurge" on extracurricular activities or supplies. That is why I feel I need to advocate for my kids. I have dedicated my life to giving back to a community that has given me so much! I love my students but I have run out of options. I need help and I'm not afraid to admit it. These children are our future leaders and they need my help but I cannot do it alone. I need YOUR help to teach the community. Not only about the future but about the history that made us who we are today! My students need 30 subscriptions to TIME For Kids Magazine, The American Colonies Paperback Series, The Social Studies Independent Project Center, and Geography Skills Overhead Kit.
