I'm a special education teacher working in low-income urban school in Virginia. Our area houses the largest concentration of Coast Guard personnel in a single geographic location (Go Coasties!), and 108,000 + active duty military personnel from other branches of the Armed Services. So we serve the families of a large diverse military population. My students are young children with special needs that include Specific Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Other Health Impairments. One challenge I face is teaching my students organizational skills and finding an easy and effective way to communicate with parents each day. My class uses a binder system called F.R.O.G. which stands for Fully, Responsible, Organized, and Growing. The purpose of the binder is to help students stay organized as they grow and learn responsibility.

I teach in a very small portable. We don’t have a lot of space and my students need an area to check-in, drop off their F.R.O.G. binders, and read or hear about important classroom news. These binders house everything from home communication, behavior, spelling and reading logs, to a section for money and permission slips, and a homework pocket. Parents of special needs children will appreciate this project because they know first hand that organization and communication can make or break their day. How many times have you packed your child up only to hear the teacher say they could not find your child’s homework, lunch money and notes? My binders have a section for everything.

So how can you help? My students need a Sign-In Communication Center for quick and easy sign-ins! This center will provide the perfect area to keep our (F.R.O.G.) school-to-home communication binders neat and organized. It has a desktop for daily sign-ins, an area for clerical supplies, a section for each student's binder, and built-in clips to display important information or notices my students need to see. It even has locking casters and a fold-open top for mobility and instant set up. It’s perfect for a busy teacher and her students who are learning how to stay organized.

Please help create a designated place for my special needs students to drop off their binders and get themselves checked in independently each morning. The Check-In Center will help facilitate a sense of calm from the moment my students enter the classroom - this is essential for my special needs kids.
