This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I have the great privilege of teaching middle school students in one of Maryland's high-poverty schools, and they are among the district's most promising students.
Some of my students have an innate interest in reading, but the others need some encouragement. Conventional wisdom tells us that the students who need encouragement are often struggling readers who avoid reading to mask their developing skills. I want for all of my students to feel as though they can be successful readers, and to get the necessary practice. The "Twilight" series is wildly popular these days, and my students are interested in reading the books. However, not everyone will be able to read them, for their reading skills will be too poor, or the fine print prohibits them.
Lucky for my students, both of these problems can be combated. I envision literature circles, wherein students can access the "Twilight" texts because audio CDs will be available, as well as one large print copy of each novel. The audio CDs will enable students to follow along with the book, teaching students to recognize new words while allowing them to strengthen their comprehension skills. The students would be spared the embarrassment of not being able to read with their peers. The large print text would enable my students with vision impairments to also partake in the literature circles.
You have the capacity to enable my students to engage in literature circles that enable them to enhance their reading skills and to build camaraderie with their classmates. You will make it possible for students who would otherwise be excluded to partake in the same activities as their better-able peers, therefore leveling the playing field for all of the.
