I am a first grade teacher at a thriving charter school in California. The vast majority of my students are high poverty and limited English speaking students. They lack access to new technologies as well as great music.

I love playing music in my classroom. I know that music empowers a child's brain and helps develop critical thinking skills. It helps children calm down after recess and helps them warm up first thing in the morning. As most primary teachers know, songs are essential to a well-functioning and engaging classroom environment. While I do have a wonderful old-fashioned CD player and radio in my classroom, it is definitely not state of the art. And although, it plays CDs just fine, it is certainly not as convenient as an iPod. With access to an iPod in my room I can download tons of great classical pieces, as well as traditional children's songs. I can also upload books on "tape" so that students can follow along in their own books. Since I don't sing very well, I rely heavily on my CD player, so I know that if I am able to have an iPod in my classroom, it would be used all day every day!

It is such a hassle to have to change the CD each time we want to listen to a different type of music. It can take up to 10 minutes each time because I have to find the CD (which often gets misplaced), find the track I want, and play. It would be a lot easier and better use of my time to pick up my remote (yes, this docking station comes complete with a remote) and quickly and easily find the song I want. I can also catagorize the music into playlists, such yoga music, classical music, energizing music, rhyming songs or math songs. It would make it much easier to have the right music playing at the right time without the hassle.

It may sound like I'm going a little overboard; seriously teachers with iPods in their classrooms? But you probably have one (or two)at home, so why shouldn't teachers have one in their classrooms? In fact I believe that all teachers should have the latest and greatest technologies in their classrooms, including iPods. With this special donation I am sure that my young students will be able to enjoy more music and a happier teacher for many years to come! Thank you for your consideration.
