"Our school is a Kindergarten to 5th grade school in a high poverty neighborhood. Our school merged with a Title I school. When the schools were combined, we lost the Title I funding and thus funds for additional materials. I teach 5th grade science and reading.

We have read "The Cay" during our study of our oceans unit in science and World War II in Social Studies. This novel addresses the South Carolina Reading Standard 5.2 on non-fiction or informational text and the SC Social Studies Standard 5-4.4 related to the United States involvement in World War II. By integrating our Reading, Science and Social studies, we can teach cross-curricular units that our students enjoy and bring reluctant readers to a level of confidence not seen in prior years. It is very hard to borrow the books from our district book center because all 5th graders in our district are studying World War II at the same time. Our families do not have the income to purchase the novels we study for their child.

By having a class set of "The Cay", we can read the book as it coincides with our study of World War II. Our children will have the opportunity to transfer what they learned about oceans and weather in science as well as see real life examples of character education that we teach each year. They will also have the opportunity to check the books out to read at home with their families.

You can make a difference in our study of World War II and our oceans unit in Science by contributing to our grant for “The Cay.” Students will have the opportunity to answer questions such as, “What is the impact of stereotyping on ethnic and racial groups in our society?” By reading realistic fiction, our students develop a love of reading from a book that relates to our world.

My students need 30 copies of "The Cay" for our novel unit that coincides with our World War II unit and our oceans unit in science.
