Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Alice in Wonderland, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, A Little Princess, these are just a few of the books I would like to introduce to my students. I teach 27-30 fifth graders in a public school, the majority coming from economically challenged and/or broken homes. Our school is a Reading First school, many of the children qualifying for free or reduced cost meals. They are all wonderful children who thirst for activities and experiences our small town does not offer. I would like to broaden their horizons by supplementing my humble classroom library with an assortment of novels written at various reading levels. My plan is to order five copies of each book, then set up literature circles on a volunteer basis, the students coming in at lunch to discuss their books. Turning non-readers into enthusiastic readers is not an easy task, and being able to read with a friend is one activity all my students enjoy. Five copies each of seven high-interest books would be a stepping stone, allowing my students to become lifelong readers. I envision the children reading these books with their friends, finishing one set, eager to go on to another. Each student would potentially have the opportunity to read all seven books! That's a phenomenal accomplishment!To give the joy of reading to a child is truly a worthwhile contribution. Helping my class obtain copies of this literature, without a doubt, would be helping the very future of our society.
