My students need trash bag liners, brooms, disposable gloves, 25 matching baseball caps, and dustpans for our "clean up day."

We are a unique Public Charter School in our Nation's Capitol. A dual immersion program, we teach two target languages to 320 students from many different cultures. Our students and staff are community service oriented. Just last year students raised funds to help build a well so an underprivileged village could have clean drinking water.

While walking through a neighborhood park, the students were dismayed at the amount of litter we had to step over. Having newly talked about clean drinking water for our school, the students decided that we needed to clean up the grounds so that litter would not make it to the pond in the park.

The children initiated the "clean up day" so we will need disposable gloves, trash can liners, brooms, dustpans and matching baseball hats. They will learn to take care of their communities and by doing so will help to take care of our animal friends that live in water.

This is an invaluable life lesson that the students will be able to draw from. By making connections to litter and the hazards trash creates for aquatic animals, students will learn to clean up after themselves and take care of the environment. Your contribution would impact a generation with "hands on minds on" science in action.
