"Night, a time of darkness, but in my class it is a time of awareness. My students will read this powerful novel and be transformed. The eighth grade charter school students that I have taught for this academic year were so enthralled with the book that when we actually took the trip to the Museum of Tolerance even the most boisterous and troublesome kids were jumbled and awed. By bringing the facts of the Holocaust to my middle school students I hope to transform them into people/adults with a "Heart for Tolerance". My goal is to get a class set of 30 novels so that even if the parent of the student is unable to provide or buy a copy it will not hinder my group from getting an invaluable lesson on a historical time that changed the world forever.

I learned this year that merely asking a parent to buy a textbook/novel is not enough. In many cases it is not possible. Therefore, I am attempting to solve the problem altogether. The novel is loved by the students and their "Tolerance Portfolios" are examples of how much they have learned and have changed.

By providing the necessary novel for the students and having it in the class, there will NEVER be an excuse as to the individual "forgetting" the book in the locker, at home, or even losing it.

Your help will ensure that my students are adequately prepared for their lessons daily and will assist in transforming their range of thinking about others, themselves and give them a "Heart for Tolerance." hide»

Dear DELL, barbara--glambert #3374 indiana chapter, Rebecca, Peter, Susan, Shanté, AO Fans and Glamberts and Anonymous Donor,

I would like to thank you for the generous donation for my kids. Words are not enough to express the feeling, that not only I felt when I was granted the resources, but my students were extremely pleased.

The books that you have funded will allow the full spectrum of learning to take place. The students will be able to analyze the literature and respond to the text by creating their "Tolerance Portfolio". This collection of poems, essays, collages and other reflective pieces will bring the content to life.

I look forward to utilizing the materials as soon as possible. Thank you.

With gratitude,
Mr. M.

"I am so amazed and impressed you are teaching this book! I can't imagine surviving the story at that age, but I applaud your efforts. If it weren't for the inspiration of Adam Lambert, I wouldn't be on this site, but I am in awe of you teaching this book. Make sure the kids retain their hope!"

Sep 14, 2009 Shanté from San Leandro, CA supporting California
"I gave to this project because the teacher cared enough about her students to put the request on a blog that I read regularly. Thank you for being such a dedicated teacher."

"I helped because I'm sickened by the cuts to education! Our children are our future and deserve quality learning."

Sep 14, 2009 Rebecca from Los Angeles, CA supporting California
"Having the opportunity to help kids succeed in school is extremely fulfilling. I'm hopeful that someday the kids that I and others have helped will remember that an act of kindness by a stranger can go a long way towards making others feel good about themselves."

Sep 4, 2009 Lisa from Beverly Hills, CA in honor of DELL from Beverly Hills, CA supporting California
"I chose to give to this project because of the teacher's admirable goals and because the book had a powerful impact on his students. All kids who want to read should have access to books. "
