Critical thinking requires exposure to varying voices through varying texts. The juniors in my school district are from varying backgrounds of low-socio-economic status, but are all super capable of achieving academic success with rigorous instruction. College is a word I insist my students have as a reality in their sight, and the stronger foundation of critical thinking skills I can give them through exposure to various texts, the better it will be for my students' academic futures.

My students are on the verge of losing the pool, over 13 teachers, and will now have larger class sizes due to the budget crisis schools in my state are now faced with. I was on the verge of losing my job, and I will do anything I can to show my students that there are people who care about their academic success in the world. These three texts will demonstrate to my students that their futures ARE VERY important to me, and to the world around them.

"Everything's an Argument" will allow students to explore how everything around them can be looked at through a critical lens, and will expose my students to a new way of exploring the world around them. "A Long Way Gone" will show my students how someone their age can overcome tremendously horrific obstacles and STILL be successful. "White Oleander" will expose my students to a writing style that will bring a new vocabulary to their lives and springboard them into future AP classes and college.

Please help my students. I know that times are tight financially right now, but if there is even a tiny amount that you can help with, I would truly appreciate it. My students deserve to have texts that will push and encourage deep thinking, and the selections provided will do just that. Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to be exposed to college-level material and practice higher-order thinking skills essential for their futures. Thank you so much.
