This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is part of a Title 1 high school in California. I teach English to low-income, at-risk students. Many of my students are 1st generation students that are college-bound. The demographics of my class are varied and diverse. The Academic Literacy class is a General Education replacement class that focuses on building reading skills and abilities for individual student needs. They are a talented and wonderful bunch of kids that deserve to be taught to their individual skills and levels.

My Project

One area where my class struggles is reading. It is an Academic Literacy class. This means that these students are placed in my class because - somewhere, somehow - they fell through the cracks and are not reading at grade level. This class set will be pivotal for our leveled literature circles. Students will take turns reading this novel with individual jobs that they are responsible for completing each week.

Giving low income and at-risk students access to leveled reading material will make a difference in their reading growth and personal success.

With high interest, low level novels, I can help promote reading while students experience success in completing a novel - many of them will be reading and finishing a novel for the 1st time in their lives!
