"My students come to school unprepared - how are they ever to succeed without the basic supplies to supplement the basic skills? I work in a very impoverished area of New York. We are a "barrier free" school. This means that we open our doors to all children, regardless of their physical limitations. Children with physical handicaps make up a large part of my school's population. It brings me great joy to see children with wheelchairs, walkers and canes attending public school and acquiring the same education as the rest of the children in their neighborhood.

Our school is 95% free lunch. If parents can't buy their children lunch, then you can bet school supplies comes after that. I have students who don't even come to school with pencils. I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to provide what my student's parents should have, but haven't been able to.

What I need is a whole bunch of basic supplies. I need copy paper and ink so that I can print worksheets and homework for my students. I need pencils, and a pencil sharpener for the classroom. It is a dream to be able to give students a "survival" kit at the beginning of the year to keep in their desks. In this kit would be pencils, erasers, scissors, markers, editing pencils, and pens. When students have so little, it is really motivating when they have something they can call theirs and be proud of. I was able to afford to give each of my students a pack of markers at the beginning of the year, and they loved it! Imagine if they had even more learning tools...

Please help me start the 2009-2010 school year off right. You can help my classroom by making a donation. How wonderful would it be if my students could walk in on the first day of school to a desk full of supplies for the year, all to themselves? hide»

My students need an extensive collection of basic school supplies for the classroom including copy paper, black laser toner cartridges, scissors, markers, dry erase markers, pencil sharpeners (classroom and individual), folders, page protectors, and highlighters. details»

Dear Osprey Seafood, Mel, "POP", Carl, Ally, The Gocs, Daniel, CJ, Eliza, Ms. McD's lil' sis, Colleen, Emma, Renee, Ken, Serena, Brad and Anonymous Donors,

Your generous gift to our classroom has truly brightened the days for my students and me. There are so many frustrations that come along with teaching students with many needs, whether they are emotionally, academically, or financially. Fortunately, your donation has made all of those challenges subside for my students, at least while they're at school.

I was able to make, for each student, a "supply bag" that they keep in their desks. They were most excited about the pack of markers all to themselves. After saying thank you, they asked if they could use the markers right away. They couldn't contain their joy! They love the pencils, the erasers, the pencil sharpener, and scissors as well, but there's just something too exciting about brand new markers. They all also have organized desks now with their color-coded folders. I think their favorite is the reading log folder, which they bring with them wherever they read. It's great seeing them using the supplies to build their independence!

I wish you could have been here when we opened the boxes with your donation. The smiles on their faces brought a smile to my own, and every time I see them open their "supply bags," I grin in gratitude. I do hope you enjoy the pictures of my students using the materials you donated to our class. I can't thank you enough for the joy you've brought to my classroom. Now, each and every one of my students truly feels special. You have endlessly enriched the lives of twenty-two students who are so worthy of love and really do just want to learn.
