We Crave Books!

My students need five small group Literature Units, for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day", "Nate the Great", "My Father's Dragon", and "Molly's Pilgrim", and we need a Pick-A-Strategy Reading Comprehension Chart.

Mrs. H-T Georgetown Primary School
Chesapeake, VA Grades 3-5

I am a first year third grade Special Education Teacher at a low income elementary school. I work with students who have a range of disabilities. My school is also located near a few large Naval bases. Most of my students this year are children of military parents.

My kids are little troopers! Some of them have frequently relocated because of their parent's jobs. One has moved more than 10 times. We are all very proud of the commitments their parents (and my husband!) have made to our country. My students truly try very hard in school each and everyday. They have to overcome so many obstacles, personally and educationally.

We need five small group Literature Units for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Day, Nate the Great, My Father's Dragon and Molly's Pilgrim and we need a Pick-A-Strategy Reading Comprehension Chart. These wonderful literature units will be used to help students develop higher-level thinking skills while they are reading. Some of my special education students encounter major difficulties processing text independently. Many are reading one or more grade levels behind their peers. Others can word call throughout the book and then be unable to answer questions about what they read – let alone make connections with literature. Reading is so essential! My students and I would use these books to build their comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills through mini-lessons during Guided Reading. Since my students progress at a slow pace, due to their disabilities, many of them have read a lot of books that are available in the Teacher’s Library at school. I want to provide them with new and engaging books to explore. Each literature unit comes with an activity guide that would help my students relate to literature and truly process what they are reading. The pocket chart would be a wonderful resource to have during Guided Reading. My students would be able to clearly define the strategy that they are using to connect to text.

Please consider giving my students meaningful literature activities! We want to read, read, read! These literature units contain copies of the book along with activities to make reading the book more interesting. The nonfiction folders are very engaging. You can provide my students with engaging activities that would make a incredibly positive impact on their reading comprehension skills.
