I teach a Sports Journalism & Communications class to a group of motivated 10th graders in a high-needs area of New York City.

Right now budget cutbacks are threatening to derail my technology-based course that engages students and emphasizes literacy, critical thought, and essential computer skills. We already face a shortage of computers, but now aging laptops are breaking down and there is no budget to replace them.

New laptops are essential to my course that allows students to actively explore and create through technology. Projects in our class include real-world products such as the creation and maintenance of websites (blogs), PowerPoint presentations, newsletters on Microsoft Publisher, and news reports and speeches recorded as MP3s.
