Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine being required to read a college textbook when your reading capabilities are still on a high school level. I teach 11th and 12th grade Psychology and Advanced Placement Psychology to students at a Title I School.

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses are expected to be successful reading college level books at the high school level. Many of the students at my school don't have the Lexile scores to match the level of textbooks used in AP courses. Increasing literacy is essential for my student's success in these rigorous courses.

I plan on using the beginning of class each day for silent reading and journal writing. Students will read a case study each week and be required to write about the case study in their journals. By the end of the course all students will have read the book: "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" by Oliver Sacks and some case studies from the book "The Forty Studies that Changed Psychology". Both books were recommended by experienced teachers at the Advanced Placement Workshop I attended. Students will have a better understanding of neurological disorders and the human mind by reading the bizarre clinical tales in the book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat". Students will also be exposed to famous studies in psychology from the book "Forty Studies that Changed Psychology". Students will use these books on a daily basis for in class reading, discussion, and journal writing. These strategies will increase student engagement by using literacy in the classroom.

You will make it possible for my students to be successful on the Advanced Placement Psychology exam and ensure that books that students find engaging are being used daily in my classroom.
