Most students roll their eyes at classic literature because they have trouble relating to mythical creatures and superhuman monsters, but when teaching a work of nonfiction and emphasizing to the students that 'yes, this all really happened', the students are more willing to read the novel, essay, poem, etc. First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung is a book in which the author takes her readers back to Cambodia during the ethnic cleansing that began in 1975 and vividly recalls the loss of her peaceful life and her loving family.

Students will be enraptured with this novel and it will force them to examine life outside of their own comfort zone. So many kids go through their days not knowing how much children in other countries are suffering and how little, at times, is done about their suffering. I want to inspire my students through Ung's tale of survival.

In order to cover this project, I will need 70 copies, at least, of First They Killed My Father. Having this book will prove invaluable to my students' awareness of the effects of war and ethnic cleansing.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to read a true story of courage, triumph, and tenacity. Ung's story is one that is not easily forgotten and it is one that must be read.
