Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach language arts and writing to sixth grade students in a high-need urban community.
The students here are not exposed to much literature and are not very interested in reading what the school text books provide for them. Unfortunately, the school is unable to provide class sets of the novels for the sixth grade even though we just added the sixth grade back to the elementary school.
However, I have realized that the students greatly enjoy reading novels in class as opposed to the short stories their reading text books provide. The few novels I have introduced to them they have been extremely motivated and interested to hear and learn more about. It gives me great pleasure to provide literature that interests the students.
The materials I would need to continuously keep my students motivated with learning would include 30 books for each of the following novels. "Hatchet", "My Brother Sam is Dead", "Old Yeller", and "The Outsiders". This will give students the opportunity to have their own copy of the novel and the opportunity to do projects related to the novel independently if they decide to work alone. The students do most of their projects and assignments in groups, however, some projects are completed independently.
These materials will greatly benefit all the students in my class now and for years to come. They will be able to have their own copy of the novel to use as a reference while we are working on the unit and to use to assist them with completing assignments throughout the unit.
I hope you understand how important this project is to these students. Your generous donation will ensure all students have the opportunity to enhance their reading and comprehension skills while enjoying the learning process.
