Keeping The Beat With Autism

My students need 1 ipod, five headphones and 1 digital voice recorder.

Connecting with autism through music! I am a special education teacher with all students on the autism spectrum. I have the most severe students at my school in kindergarten through third grade.

Want to learn the presidents? There is a song to teach it! Want to learn about the water cycle? There is a song about it! Want to learn your letter sounds? There is a song to teach it! That is EXACTLY how we are reaching our students with autism! Music is a MUST HAVE in our classroom! It is extremely challenging to find an approach that grabs the attention of all of my students, that is until we found music. We use music to teach EVERYTHING! We teach literacy, math, science, social studies, and social skills through song. Our students absolutely LOVE it and LEARN through music!

Music needs to be easily and readily accessible for my students. We have FM systems already installed in our classroom and an ipod would give us the means to broadcast our music throughout our entire room. This will also allow for students to listen to music individually with headphones and the use of the ipod. A digital voice recorders allows teachers and students to record and make more songs. We have truly found a way to unlock our students potential and find out what they are capable of through song. This is such a powerful tool in our classroom.

You are helping unlock the mysteries of autism by helping children with autism learn. We have found a way to reach our students through music; give us the tools to make it happen!
