Where was this when I was in school!?!? Our urban school district is having trouble making Social Studies "stick" with our kids. The upper grades have been reporting low test scores in Virginia Studies and Geography. I am one of four 2nd grade teachers in the building and we are each trying to be very proactive by "beefing up" our social studies curriculum in an effort to eliminate this deficiency.

This STOPS rug is so neat! (I wish I had thought of it!) It is in an active way to teach and review the geography of North America- I envision using it for map skills, playing review games, and even have students work in learning groups to discover where we are in the world! The rug has clear, eye-catching labels including countries, continents, oceans, lakes, rivers, and a compass rose- ALL the elements that are part of our Social Studies curriculum!

Not only would this rug be an exciting addition to how we teach Social Studies, it would also replace the VERY old one we have now. Our students don’t have much, but they do have very dedicated teachers! It is important for us to create a warm, welcoming environment which is safe for our students to take risks and learn. I am embarrassed to admit that I have stopped asking my students to gather on the carpet ever since I heard, “This rug is nasty, can I sit on a chair?”

Our school is full of resourceful, crafty people and I have though of many creative ways to overcome our budget barriers, but I just can’t work through this one! Please help us create a classroom that is as colorful and exciting as our spirit! THANK YOU!
