My students need good reading models and love to monitor themselves and recognize their own reading improvement. My class consists of 24 to 28 first grade students in a Title 1 school. Most students are home with older siblings or in the care of other adults while parents work long hours. Many students are faced with difficult home situations and do not have good reading models.

My students do not often have good reading models at home. With parents working hard to provide for their families, the time for reading together gets squeezed out. Students need to have good reading models to pattern themselves after in order to become fluent readers.

We need some cassette recorders, cassette players and headphones. Cassette recorders will allow students to record their own reading throughout the year, listen to themselves and grow in their reading and fluency abilities. Adult role models will also be able to record reading and students can listen to these models and follow the text in classroom or library books. The students are excited at the thought of having the principal, myself and parents read stories to them that students can listen to over and over again. I hope this will be a way for parents to get involved in reading to their children too.

Your donations will make it possible for my students to monitor their own reading skills and have the examples good readers to model after. This will make it possible for parents to read to their children vicariously through recordings that students can treasure and listen to over and over again.
