"I teach a third grade class with various economic needs. I have great parental support from some of my parents, while others never darken my doors. I want to inspire my children to love reading and watch it come to life when they have manipulatives and books to read and love. I teach an inclusion class where there are children who have various needs. These hands-on manipulatives would greatly be appreciated and very much needed. When you are able to provide visuals to your students, it motivates them to want to learn even more.
My classroom theme is about the ocean. I have picked some stories and visuals to motivate my students to develop an interest in this area. I have also picked books that would hook my reluctant readers to want to read and to retell the story with props. This will be such a visual strength for my students who have special needs. It will also develop a strength in remembering the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Many of my students do not have money for Clothing much less books. They are from single parent homes where parents are not there most of the time anyway. They are excited about being able to have anything to do with literature. They love the opportunity to be able to share quality time with a parent using a book as a way to do that. If this project is accepted, I am hoping that the parents will take an interest in promoting time out of their busy schedules to read with their children. I also believe that teaching an inclusion classroom has also taught me that I must provide as many visuals and opportunities to use visuals with my students who have special needs. I empower the idea of meeting all of my students needs but especially those who are in the inclusion model. I have a child with special needs myself and I know how wonderful it is to have visuals to read with him. My Book Just Came To Life is possible if someone will see the need to empower children with that chance to have a book in their hands that provides stimulation and visuals. I wish that I could buy all the things that I truly need for my classroom but that is not possible financially. I ask that you give a child in my class the opportunity to see their book come to life as they retell a story using visuals. They will not only improve their fluency, but will also improve their comprehension skills, and their ability to see the beginning of a story, the middle of a story, and the end of a story. Please help me do this for the children in my class. My students need books that will stimulate their minds and motivate them to read. HIDEMrs. S.'s Classroom:
