I teach high school students in grades nine through twelve at a relatively small urban high school. Our school is designed to serve the needs of students with mild to moderate cognitive delays.

On select Fridays throughout the school year I have the opportunity to teach a special class. The purpose of this class is to promote social development while also teaching the students a skill that they are unlikely to learn in the course of their regular academic classes. This year I would like to teach my students about the fabulous world of mixed media art. Due to the cognitive delays that my students struggle with many of them experience a great deal of difficulty in the core subject areas. However, self expression is an area in which anyone and everyone has the ability to excel. Unfortunately, quality art supplies can be difficult to acquire on small school's limited budget.

I would like to start my students off on this journey of self expression through the use of rubber stamps and a variety of inks. My students are familiar with rubber stamps in the form of a star or smiley face on their class work from their younger years. I would like to teach them a few techniques and put these previously hands off, teachers only tools into their hands. I believe that this format will allow my students to express themselves through art in a way that is novel for them. I know that they will meet this challenge by creating wonderful works of art that will foster a sense of success that they may not always feel in school.

This project will enable each student to create a work of art to be proud of that they can share with their family and friends and showcase within their own school. By choosing to fund this project you will make it possible for my students to express the creativity that I know they all have inside.
