My students are ages 3 to 6 and are handicapped. I have students with lots of different kinds of disabilities - autism, sticklers syndrome, seizure disorders, down syndrome, hearing impaired, visually impaired, just to name a few. I love my job and my children; they are so wonderful to work with, and give their all to try new things.
The current playground we use is literally falling apart, and is not a safe area for these students. It is also impossible to take a wheel chair out because of the gravel in the yard. The community is very supportive and parents are very helpful, but they all come from a low socio-economic background. Many have lost jobs and are unable to pay their bills. I would like to create a place the children can learn and play in and the community could be proud of.
My students come from a low socio-economic background and are a mix between typical 4 year olds and special needs 3 to 6 year olds. Obesity is a big issue in our state, and is very prevalent in handicapped individuals. I would like to provide a safe and accessible play area for the students and the community to use. It will be utilized by approximately 25 students at a time, and I would like to have tricycles for students to learn to pedal, as well as plasma cars for those who have no use of their legs. The Crawl and Climb Caterpillar would provide a place to climb and slide. The Front Porch playhouse would be a great addition for students to use dramatic play and housekeeping as well as being wheel chair friendly.
We need a play ground apparatus as well as tricycles, balance area, and a play house would be nice for their imaginations. We also would like a solid surface for the students in wheelchairs to be able to have access to every area of the play ground. We will be putting in a garden for the students to dig and learn where food comes from and how it grows.
These children will not ever have access to this type of area without your help. I have 3 local boy scouts who are working on their Eagle Scout Projects who are also trying to help and make this dream come true. Any donations would be welcomed and deeply appreciated. Thank You for your support!
