Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a low income school in Nevada. While I may teach 4th graders who come from homes where it is hard to make it from day to day, my students have a thirst for knowledge and learning and inspire me everyday.

Math is a challenging subject for most people. One thing that you learn about math is that you have to know the basics in order to succeed in the complicated. Mastering basic math operations is a challenge when the available resources are low. The resources that I have for my students are small and have been there since the beginning. They say that variety is the spice of life, but for my students that is not an option with the limited resources that I can provide for them to master multiplication, division, fractions, money, and so much more.

By having a variety of resources to practice these vital math skills, my students will continue to learn and grow. Having more than 1 set of flashcards will allow more of my students to practice everyday. Fact stamps will allow students to practice in a concrete writing fashion connecting math and literacy together for a more meaningful practice. Fun games and activities make practicing facts more exciting. Research says that the brain needs to see something 3 times before you can remember it. Combining these new resources with old, my students will have the opportunity to see these basic math operations hundreds of times.

Your assistance will help boost the self-esteem of my wonderful group of students. Remember what it was like in school, when you would try and try to get something and it was so challenging that you almost gave up. Then your teacher gave you something different, a different approach to the same thing, and you finally got it. That feeling of accomplishment and being proud of yourself for not giving up is something that you can give to my students. I never want to see a student give up because something is a challenge, and you have the chance to help change that.
