A Pic is Worth a Thousand Words, A Projector Costs As Much

My students need a projector to see first hand how participating in risky behaviors can harm them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Health teacher, split between a middle school and a high school. I am in a community which is considered to be high need. My subject is required for all students, special education included.

My subject is last on the list when it comes to supplies. Our textbooks are over seven years old. I don't even have one computer in my classroom. I have high school students who are having sex and taking a variety of drugs and are clueless when it comes to the consequences of their behaviors. My middle school students are obsessed with gangs and violence and are unable to link the negative outcomes that come from their actions. The majority of my students eat fast food almost every single day and don't realize how their bodies are affected. With this projector, I plan to utilize the Internet, play true to life movies, and distribute notes and other information that my students need.

I plan to give my high school students a project. This project will have the students doing the research for a particular STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). They will have to get all of the information on that particular STI and pictures as well. Then, using the projector they will have to teach the class about that disease. The students will be able to see what will happen when they don't practice abstinence or are not practicing "safer" sex. Also, the CDC's website offers excellent slides that students can see updated pictures, facts, and statistics. The latest stats for 2007 show an increase in Chlamydia cases, 1,108,374, the highest number ever reported (cdc.gov). Ages fifteen to twenty-four showed the highest reported diagnosis. Seeing this information should make anyone reconsider abstaining or not giving ANY excuses for not using a condom. For my drug unit, I plan to show the before and after pictures of people who abuse crystal meth, true to life tracheotomy videos, and the effects of marijuana. Also, I will use webquests for my nutrition unit, so students can track their diets and the amount of physical activity they participate in.

By donating to this project, not only are the students learning skills for high school, but they will carry these skills on to college and hopefully for the rest of their lives.
