The Art of Reading: Discovering Graphic Novels

My students need a set of 43 graphic novels to help spark their interest in reading and discover a different type of storytelling.

Mr. Cox Westlane Middle School
Indianapolis, IN Grades 6-8

I am the mentor to a special group of students called Academy Six. These are lower level kids who are hard working and were retained once in elementary. Instead of being retained again we promote them to 6th grade and offer them support. They complete a special program with remediation in the 6th grade and then go on to a normal schedule in the 7th and 8th grades. They spend 90 minutes every other day with me having re-teaching sessions and study skills. We would like to dedicate some time to reading for pleasure too. Most of these students have never read a book simply because they wanted to read it. They were forced to read something for class that often was hard to understand and did not hold their interest.

Working with 6th graders who many times face adversity as a learning disabled student or are a English second language learner provides a unique challenge. Often books written to appeal to their age level are hard for them to understand. Likewise, books written at their reading level come across as childish. Given these obstacles students often become more turned off to the idea of reading for pleasure.

The solution is right in our faces. With the recent theatrical successes of Batman, Iron Man, X-Men, and others, Comic Books are now a big part of popular culture. Even better they are issued in the form of graphic novels. These books are cleverly written with deep plots that can appeal to students of all ages. My class needs a set of graphic novels to begin to nurture a new group of life long readers.

With your help my students will have an amazing tool to develop their joy of reading. I believe these resources will enhance their own creativity as well as improve reading skills and vocabulary. I can't think of a better tool than an amazing piece of art to help students figure out a word or phrase that they may not know. These books will become a catalyst to a variety of class projects from creating their own superhero to using traits of these characters to help remember characters from other stories.
