"To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" have become a hit with my students!

I teach at a rural K-12 school in East Tennessee. The students in my school have limited access to classic literature and other books of interest. This year I was able to introduce my current 6th graders to classic literature such as " The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain and "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. At first my students were having a difficult time understanding our current textbook. (It is written on a college level and my students come from middle to lower class working families with little exposure to the classic works of literature). After reading "Stage Freight" by Mark Twain I began to notice many of my students show interest in Mark Twain. I decided to experiment so I got each of them a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I was knocked off my feet when I overheard some of my students say," I like this book because Tom thinks just like I do!" Once we finished reading this book, I noticed an improvement in their reading comprehension. I also noticed they wanted more and did not want to return to the, "Boring old textbook!" as one student put it. I then began to read To Kill A Mockingbird and they loved it even more than the movie!

With your generous donation, I will be able to bring the classics to my students. I would like to provide each student with a copy of such books as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "To Kill A Mockingbird" and others.

Your help will ensure that my technologically overloaded students will come in contact with the classics of literature. It is my desire to make books cool again with my students! I want them to read these books and fall in love again with characters such as Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Boo from To Kill A Mockingbird. Please help me make this dream a realization
