"I teach kindergarten in a classroom where many of my students have not gone to preschool and are missing some of the basic pre-kindergarten experiences that other 5 year-olds have had.

My class consists of 13 energetic Kindergartners from a variety of home and family structures. More than half of my students come from low income families and the majority of students are not white.

Before students become readers and writers, there are a number of skills that need to be present, such as letter identification, letter-sound awareness, and rhyming. Many of my students come to school without any of the those skills and we spend the beginning of the year working hard to gain basic letter and phonemic knowledge. As the year goes on, students are expected to continue to work on these skills in independent learning centers while I teach reading in small groups. Unfortunately, we have few materials to use in those centers.

This grant will provide a variety of independent literacy center activities for students to continue to build their letter, word, and rhyming skills. It will enable them to expand their basic literacy skills during center time through hands-on, manipulative letter and word play.

Your help will enable students to catch up with their school district peers who have had preschool and leap ahead in learning to read and write.

My students need 10 independent literacy center materials, such as letter manipulatives, writing boards and dry erase markers, letter tiles, writing paper, phonics and sight word activities.
