My school is a high-poverty and minority school near the international border. We have an International Baccalaureate Program for our highest performing students. They do not have the resources to buy books for enrichment reading.

I teach AP World History. Students have a hard time connecting with the beginnings of civilization and ancient cultures. Many AP World History teachers use Lord of the Flies to help students see the need for government, the development of religion, and the state of human groups without rules.

Lord of the Flies is a book about young people close to the age of my students who find themselves stranded in a place without rules. The story epitomizes the outcome of such a state, and I believe it will prove to be invaluable in connecting my students' lives to the history they are studying.

In many public high schools, students are expected to purchase books for enrichment reading, but at my school this expectation is unrealistic. You will make it possible for my students to have a comparable experience in AP World History as students from more well-endowed circumstances. Reading Lord of the Flies may help them on the AP World History exam, and it will definitely help them see the need for and origin of many human institutions.
