This is a charter school for students recovering from alcohol or other substance abuse. Students will come here from treatment centers or from being expelled from other schools due to substance abuse. This school keeps them from having to return to an environment that is harmful or will negatively impact their recovery. Here our primary focus is on recovery using 12 step principals and secondly on academics.
The supplies we have available are for indoor activities. We use them frequently as they are fitness oriented and our kids are not in the best physical shape. However, research shows that addicts need sunlight and that sunlight aids in recovery. They do not especially like to go outside, they are used to staying inside by themselves with their best friend the bottle or joint. Students also need to know that they can do something that is fun without getting high.
The materials I am requesting would enable us to go outside and do an activity that they may possibly enjoy, and hold their interest for at least 30 minutes. The frisbee golf set will encourage them to be active even if it is just walking and throwing a frisbee, give them some direction and experience interpersonal relationships with other students.
