I am an English Language Learning teacher in an elementary school located in an urban setting with a low socioeconomic base. My school supports a large population of special needs ranging from students with autism, learning disabilities, and language proficiency challenges.

My classroom is filled with English Language Learning students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition to this challenge, these students and their parents often face language barriers in communication both at school and at home. Their parents often cannot read with them at home to increase English language proficiency because they themselves do not speak or read the language. Having the portable cd players would be helpful as it would allow my students the opportunity to hear a story or music (previously used in the classroom)in the comfort of their own homes. Having these tools available to them often means the difference between extending the language learning into the home environment and having it stop the moment the students head out of the school building for the day. Any opportunity to extend the learning experience beyond the classroom is welcomed.

I believe that having portable CD players available for students to check out and take home would allow them the opportunity to continue developing areas of English language proficiency including oral, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Your assistance will make it possible for my students to bring the classroom into their own homes. This opportunity will also empower parents to take on a more active role in their child's learning and thus, strengthen the connection between home and school in the form of supporting homework experiences. This is something that is not possible at this time due to budgetary constraints. Thank you for your consideration.
