Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Education is the window to the future and the window is opening with a lesson on soil and soil sampling kits. I teach 8th grade Science in a rural, low-income school. Nearly all my students are minorities and over half of them are from migrant families and are second language English students. Most of their parents are not educated and work in the fields for very low-paying jobs.
Our students face real life challenges not just in the future, but in everyday life. Their lives are surrounded by gangs, drugs, crimes, and teen pregnancy. Many of them come from homes where education is a distant dream that is unachievable. To combat these troubles and make education relevant, I have focused on bringing a speaker who is an expert on different types of soils and plants. However, I also want to give my students some hands-on experience with soil testing to prepare them and keep them engaged and involved in the presentation.
In order to help my students identify more personally with our guest speaker, I want them to have a chance to experiment with soil sampling. This beginning experiment will require soil sample kits and workbooks that are not available in my classroom. The students will gain much from this activity. At the 8th grade level, students are building understanding of the opportunities available to them in the world. This is the prime time in a teenager's life to give them new experiences that can shape decisions for the future. I work hard to show them many options and to present a variety of topics in order to keep the students engaged and to reach each one with an idea to spark their minds.
With your help, my students can make a better choice for their future and see that they can make a career in soil testing and agriculture. With your help, this intro to soil testing can inspire my students to pursue a career instead of just a job and to see that they can have other options instead of working in the fields for very low pay. With your help, we will continue to explore our world.
