In a world of computers and spell check, my students have become dependent on red squiggly lines under words spelled incorrectly and fail to recognize the importance of understanding. Our program serves Special Education High School students (Grades 9-12) from varied ethnic backgrounds, in a self-contained setting. All students come from a low-income background and currently receive free or reduced lunch. Students are identified with a variety of disabilities and are working towards an Occupational Diploma. This diploma provides students with the skills to enter the workforce and the opportunity to further their education at the local Technical College. While my students are served in the Special Education setting, they all desire to achieve independence. My students need 10 school dictionaries! The current lack of dictionaries and understanding of their importance does not adequately prepare students to complete college entrance essays, job applications or resumes required to achieve their goals. In order to provide students with the necessary skills to be successful and independent in the real world, we need dictionaries. These dictionaries will allow students to recognize the importance of expanding their vocabulary and encourage a lesser dependence on computers. With a new found familiarity of dictionaries, students will be able to successfully complete college entrance essays, job applications and resumes required to achieve their goals. These dictionaries will prove to be beneficial on a daily basis, in completing assignments and homework. You will make it possible for my students to learn the basic skills that will ensure success in their chosen endeavors.
