"In past years, I have discovered the value of recording student activities by taking endless pictures. Parents as well as kids LOVE flipping through photo albums of school activities and adventures. However, in the past I've depended on disposable cameras that require me to develop the entire film and often half the photos taken are a complete disaster. Not to mention that the cost of purchasing and developing quickly adds up. Although it works, it's time consuming and costly, and it does not provide a chance for my students to be involved in documenting their classroom memories and/or using the photographs in a timely fashion for projects they are working on.

The digital camera I am requesting will be used directly by my students when I permit them to take the camera on our class outings to document our excursions to places such as the Asian Art Musuem and Lawrence Hall of Science. Within the classroom, students will be selected to take photos of the many different projects we find ourselves completing - everything from science projects to art projects.

In Science, students can use the camera to document progress in an investigation or Science experiment. Specifically in writing, I'd like my students to take pictures of their classmates and with their own digital picture create a magazine cover that advertises their accomplishments. Following the creation of their magazine cover, students will write an autobiographical essay or interview set in the future where they explain in detail the successes they have had since being in my classroom. In addition, I'd like to pair my students up with parent helpers to help them learn how to download photographs taken and upload them on an Internet-based photo album specifically created for our classroom. Lastly, this will provide students with the opportunity to volunteer their digital skills to our parent yearbook staff and assist with photo selection and cropping, when needed.

With technology advancing everyday, I've discovered the joys of using a digital camera in the classroom. Being able to see co-workers snap shots of their students with digital cameras and then immediately upload to their classsroom website allows their classroom experiences to be shared with parents as well as students instantly. It's immediate gratification for all. And being a 5th grader teacher, such an opportunity provides lasting memories for students who often take new paths in life as they graduate from 5th grade and move on to middle school.

I think it's fair to say that most people love to look back on their old photos to help remind them of happy times. I would love to be able to provide my students with the opportuninty to create their own lasting memories.

Thank you for taking time to review my grant request.

The cost of a Canon Powershot A520 Digital Camera and a carrying case is $461, including shipping and fulfillment ?.

Dear Josh, Nikki and Aron, Jenny, Keira and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you very much for your generous gift to my classroom. By providing a digital camera, you've allowed my students to document the wonderful experiences, projects, and outings we participate in this school year. I plan to store the camera for my students, but would like to see the camera make its way into their hands, so they can document their 5th grade school year.

In addition, I would like to use in a writing project later this year that allows my students to write a futuristic piece where they are on the cover a magazine such as Time and share an essay about a discovering or goal they have reached in their life.

Thank you very much. Your gift will not go to waste. Because of donors like you, classrooms are allowed to grow both academically, technologically, and creatively.

Sincerely,
Aisling M
Grade 5
