Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Chemistry and ICP (Integrated Chemistry and Physics) to high needs students in an urban high school. Traditional teaching methods do not work as well as traditional teachers would like them to any more. These methods, especially do not work with urban students who have lost the desire to learn in a culture of apathy and entertainment. Standing behind a desk, in front of the room, does not work for these students. Students need the one on one interaction necessary to really learn the materials. Watching me talk about the subject just won't cut it. My classroom needs the modern technology that will free us from traditional lecture formats. Interactive whiteboards are nice and improve the learning environment, but what my students really need is me. A laptop, which would give me the freedom to be amongst my students and still see our results at the front of the room so that all students can gain from the learning experience. This is exactly what this generation needs in the classroom. A touchscreen laptop would provide the true interaction to create an interactive classroom to teach the materials students need to know to be successful in college and the workplace. Your contribution will help prepare students for college by improving their current learning conditions. Many college professors are using such technology already and students would be familiar with the technology and the learning environment. Most of all, students would have an increased participation in the lessons leading to an increase in retaining the material. All of this will lead to success in college and beyond.
