Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten through 5th grade art in a Title 1 school in southern Nevada. Despite the many challenges that my students face, they are bright, wonderful young individuals who really get excited about school and learning. It is my goal to give each one of my students the best art experiences that are available anywhere, because they deserve it.
My second graders have recently been studying Japan in their homeroom classes. I would like to supplement what they have learned by doing an art project about gyotaku, the Japanese art of printing freshly caught fish. Unfortunately, I only have three rubber fish, and I have about 40 students per class, so I cannot do the project as of yet. I cannot bring in real fish because of the smell and because I think the students would find it to be to gross to make art! Unfortunately, I do not have a budget for supplies such as this.
I need enough rubber fish so that the classes can work in small groups and each one of them can make a few prints. This would be a great lesson as we would learn about the parts of a fish (science), about Japan (social studies), multiples and borders (math), teamwork (social skills), and we could write stories about our fish as well (language arts). This would be valuable for my students in so many ways, plus I believe they would really enjoy it because it is such a unique kind of project. It also satisfies many of the standards that Nevada has for art education.
Your help will ensure that my students get to have the most enjoyable and valuable print making experience they can get! I love to see the students get excited about learning in art class, and you can ensure years of enjoyment and learning by students by helping us with this exciting project!
