Crafty Blue Devils

My students need 16 materials such as crayons, markers, pencils, scissors, a pencil sharpener, and glue sticks to integrate hands-on, creative learning into every day lessons.

My classroom is a learning-centered environment where students and teacher learn simultaneously. There is no better joy than watching students work cooperatively to create representations of their learning. Each student sees & processes information differently and being able to have them create work that reflects learning and progress is a fascinating opportunity from the viewpoint of a teacher and a great way to push students to think outside the box.

School supplies are not easy to come by. The $250 check at the beginning of the year goes very quickly. When one is short stocked from the beginning, it is very difficult to make creative learning fun and effective because there are never enough supplies to go around. It simply is too hard financially to keep trying to restock supplies throughout the year, especially during budget cuts when looking for reimbursement is a sticky situation.

In order to effectively use creative learning in my classroom, I am hoping for enough arts/crafts supplies (crayons, markers, pencils, scissors, pencil sharpener, glue sticks) to keep my classroom stocked all year. Additionally, if I am able to give each cooperative group their own set of supplies, each group will be able to focus more on the project at hand and less on wandering around trying to swipe unused materials from other groups at every chance. Students will be prouder of their work when they are not scrounging for supplies and having to only create posters in one color because of lack of markers.

If you as a donor contribute to the stocking of my art supplies, you will enable me as a teacher to move away from the podium of lecture and move into the crowd so to speak, setting students free to work and think cooperatively as well as independently to create true reflections of learning that can be displayed and referenced throughout the school year. Not only that, if students learn to be productive learners now where the emphasis is on producing a result and thinking about their work rather than regurgitating answers, they will be more likely to be productive college students - knowing how to manipulate facts into representations of true learning.
