I teach web page design at an inner city, high need high school,in Missouri. The students learn the basics of how to create web pages, and work to create/maintain the school web page. Many students go on to college and enter the graphic design/web design fields.

The web design class has become crucial to the school. We are creating the page from nothing, making teacher, sports, club pages, etc. The parents can access it to get information about dates, tests, contacting teachers, and schedule changes. The students gather the data and use their understanding to design the web page. It has never been fully up and running, as storing the files has been tricky. It used to be saved at the school, but multiple computers crashed and the data was lost. It is currently on my personal laptop, the safest place I can put it. This however, limits the students access to the website. I am hoping to get the page saved to an external hard drive, dedicated only to the school site, so it can be backed up, and they can have access to it. I have a group of students that have committed to stay after school to completely finish the school web page in the fall.

First, I am seeking 3 external 1tb hard drives, 1 for the web page, and 2 for their additional coursework. Each student is assigned 5 GB of memory on the network, and with all of their classes, this is used up before the semester. Many have to delete past projects in order to continue. Second, I am hoping for 24 flash drives, that will allow my students to take work home when needed. The students could check out a flash drive to take work home and to return in. Currently, they need to email it back and forth, and the school filters block most email accounts. The flash drives would also provide for collaboration with the club and sports sponsors, and getting information to/from teachers concerning their web page. The last item I was seeking will help the yearbook and newspaper as well as the web design class. We were asked to create a history section about the school, and the machine would allow us to piece together the last 20 or so years of history. There are boxes of old negatives from year book, and newspaper, but they have no way to make these items digital. This will also allow students to bring negatives from home, turn them into digital pictures and add them to their web pages. How Cool!

Your help will make it possible for the students to create and maintain the school web page, to have greater access to the page, and to take more ownership in it. The class will be able to use the external hard drives to store the web page, and their work. This will allow for them to create a portfolio of their work, which they can use when applying to colleges. The flash drives will make it easier for my students to overcome frustrating challenges when they can't save or move their work from one computer to another. All of your help will allow me to make the class more interesting, add new elements and concepts to the class, and to more fully engage the students' interest in graphic and web design. All of these items will spur the interest in web design and encourage them to pursue a college degree in this area.
