Nonfiction Can Be Just As Good

My students need 28 copies of the book by E.H. Gombrich entitled "A Little History of the World".

Help us understand ourselves and plan for our future by reading about our past. I am a sixth grade Language Arts teacher in a rural, high-poverty school district. I am interested in cross-curricular literature that will improve reading as well as an understanding of the history of humanity.

Fiction isn't everything, and we have had a reality check. Like everyone else we have experienced extreme budget cuts wherein we are unable to have the school purchase supplies for our classrooms. Many of our class novel sets are outdated, incomplete, and falling apart. Moreover, all of our class novel sets are fiction books. I really hate to confine my students to only one genre. I especially hate seeing my little history buffs suffer in Language Arts because everything that we do is fiction-based.

I hope that by doing a study of the history of the world through a kid-friendly book, I will be able to open my students up to different genres. I will also help those who hate reading realize that perhaps they just didn't have the right book.

We certainly don't have the means to broaden our horizons ourselves. I would love to help my students become more well-rounded readers and better prepared citizens of the world.
