I am the Arts Coordinator for a designated School for the Arts located in a historic New York neighborhood. The School is a Title 1 school with almost 90% of students receiving one or more free or reduced cost meals.

We are currently in the 11th year of a blossoming theater-arts program that now includes multiple public performances of a student-written and produced play. As part of that program, the school developed a sub-program called “The Crew”, a group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders who create the sets and props for these school shows (not every child can be an actor or actress, but all can participate in our presentations). Unfortunately, one of our two Airbrushes has worn out and needs replacement. This has seriously limited the number of painted backgrounds and sets that can be completed with a single airbrush. This is quite frustrating to the students as it limits the number of students that can learn to use this wonderful arts tool. We tried to identify other funding, but monies are tight at this time and we’ve been told “maybe next year." But that can't happen in time to meet the set design needs in the early part of the school year and the wear and tear on our existing 10 year old airbrush may take its toll.

In these austere times we must, at the least, hold on to the innovative programs, like this one, that we have developed. We need a new airbrush to keep “The Crew” functioning at full capacity.
