"Vinyl records are an important part of a high school music program.

I teach students that are learning English and are new to this great country. They study English through music history and performance. All my students are high-need.

Over the years I have collected many classical vinyl records for my school. I find them in front of buildings, friends get rid of them, and I buy them at used record shops. My students love studying about the great composers and their lives. We look at historical developments that influenced their compositions and we look at the stories behind the compositions themselves. Past projects have included historical puppet shows and class field trips to hear orchestras. My students really enjoy great classical music. I would like to further their excitement by having a listening center where they can listen to these great recordings.

Because so much of our sound recordings are on vinyl the school needs two record players for the students so they can listen to these great albums and study the music. I believe this experience of listening and thinking critically to music will help my students get into college as it is a great motivator for written activities. My students love writing about music and we use this to teach them about college essay writing and passing the regents. I firmly believe that our music program helps kids get into college and that these record players will help them get there.

Furthermore, the added value of record players is that they will get experience that can help them if they want to work in the music world. DJs, radio hosts, and teachers need to know how to work turntables.

By providing two turntables to my high school music program, you will give the gift of music scholarship to my students. They will gain valuable skills that will help them in college and in the music profession. They will have access to hundreds of recordings in our library that at the moment can not be played. They will use these recordings for research and writing.

My students need 2 record players. The cost of this proposal is $473, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund,
Thank you for providing my class with two turntables. I found them particularly useful because they have USB drives and they can save songs from the records to a digital format to use with class projects. My students were so excited to be DJs they almost broke them. But that shows you the engagement level that they had. I quickly taught them how to use them and the fun learning was on its way with no broken equipment.

I was able to buy lots of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms Lps and the kids are now listening to great music.

Thank you for your generosity.

With gratitude,
Mr. H.

Dear Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund,
Thank you so much for providing us with a turntable system to listen to our record collection.  Your generosity will help many people learn and enjoy classical music.  It will as provide a way for my students to learn the practical art of being a DJ.  I have several record collections that are organized around the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.  I am looking forward to being able to use these since without a player I was out of luck.  I know my kids are going to be very excited about your gift.

With gratitude,
Mr. H.
