Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Technology-driven math classrooms employing tools that can also be used by students on the high-stakes, advanced SAT and ACT tests are double blessings. The TI-Nspire calculator, almost a handheld computer, fits this dream. It allows instruction in all high school math and science subjects; in particular, Statistics, Calculus, and Physics, with a rigorous level of student involvement. We have the curriculum to use them, but we need to complete our class set not just for fairness, but for consistency of instruction. Yes, they make our teachers work harder, but we want our Title 1 school to soar like a private prep school.
Five NSpires will help form a class set. With a class set, all students can participate and all can start on the same level. Nspires allow equations and graphs to be visualized with clarity and modified in real-time, not scratched slowly on a board. More students can become confident in making math happen in front of them.
Teachers have 180 students per day per classroom, and some classes have 40 students. Our eight math teachers are making a real effort to integrate technology and teaching. The five NSpires will help form a class set that will be shared by two teachers. They will join another teacher using a class set of older TI-84 calculators, and hopefully four with class sets of sophisticated two-line calculators. These calculators will help prepare my students for college.
Even in good economic times the budget for five TI-Nspire calculators would rarely be approved. With the Bill and Melinda Gates matching grant sitting there waiting for us to raise 50% of the funds needed, now is a great time for you to join us, and help. Let's think big.
