Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Physics to 11th and 12th graders. We are a high poverty public school. Our students have desperate need for out of the book experiences. They are dying to get their hands on some real tools, other than a pencil.

We have been working with vector analysis of forces and studying characteristics of solids. in order to complete this project we need hundreds of tiny sticks and the funds just aren't there.

When we design our bridges to support our heavy load the students will have to ask the question, just how much can one stick hold before it breaks? The project will necessitate the study of compression and tension and help to make those concepts relevant and fun.

This project will ensure the students have an appreciation for design as well as materials. The way the bridges are built, is as important as the materials they are made from. It will demand from them accuracy and precision in measuring and cutting, or else the bridge just won't work. They will have to do it right, or do it again--just like in the real world.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
