Ninging It for Life Long Learning in Literature

My students need 10 copies each of 8 novels, including "Life of Pi", "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Bound".

At this time, students in my 9th grade English classes have completed a Literature circle outside reading project. Upon completion of this unit, students were so inspired and had such fun with it, they requested to continue this project into the summer months with their required summer reading. Students set up NING blogs for their groups and each day contributed to discussions, blogs and chat with students throughout our school, who were reading the same literature. Students were also required to meet three times in person in their groups to have literature circle discussions on their "reads." As budget cuts are sure to impact our district, i don't want the kids to lose their newly found enthusiasm for books. It is my hope to continue with the literature circles and community sites online, as well as incorporate global and US studies into their projects. This will continue throughout the 2009-2110 school year.

Obstacles my students face: Budget cuts for purchasing books this year. Out of date and broken down books - not many choices for students at this time, as we are required to provide the books for them if we institute a required summer reading program.

We need book sets for opportunities in choice. I am constantly telling students that everything they do or don't do is up to them - it is all about choices...good and bad. Students here are requesting a learning opportunity, and I want them to have it. It is not often when students are requesting specific assignments and outcomes, and this is something educators dream about!

You help will ensure my students will have the opportunity to adventure into the 21st century skill of life long learning by enabling them to look beyond the school day and the school year to collaborate and communicate with peers and teachers on meaningful issues in literature relevant to global studies and ELA.
