The colors of mathematics are about to be displayed in my class. I teach mathematics to students in grades 7-12. I am the only math teacher at our rural school. We are a high-need school. That is difficult for many of us to admit. We, the school, take pride in ourselves and what we do.

It is difficult for me to obtain all the materials that are needed for me to teach my classes effectively. My geometry students are calculating angle measures and segment length. I try to do this with a hands-on approach. I have an activity, “Bending Lines,” that I try to incorporate into the class. The activity introduces/reinforces vocabulary terms and theorems that are presented in geometry. This activity always amazes students because it is an optical illusion – watching straight lines bend into parabolas.

I am requesting embroidery floss that will represent the “bending lines” as well as tapestry needles to weave the floss through the paper. To aid in the entire lesson, I am asking for additional materials: scissors, hole punch, pencils and markers. I purchase various materials for my classroom, but I cannot keep up with the demand.

Your help will aid my students to understand mathematics. You know as well as I do that math is all around us, it’s everywhere. Please help me to show my students that truth.
