"Beginning Band or Fifth Grade Band is a great place to learn personal discipline, cooperation, and community contribution. My school is a high poverty school in which educational activities, like band, have kept kids coming back to school, and looking forward to the school day.
It is critical that students start in band when they are the most flexible and curious in their group participation choices, and the least influenced by what others consider acceptable. Any opportunity is a fun opportunity to a Fifth Grader. By Sixth Grade other influences, such as peer pressure, or fear of failure, creep in and rob discovery.
I would like to see students at the Fifth Grade level have the opportunity to try a band instrument during the school day without the financial restrictions of State, and Local budgets. To continue to give these students an option beyond the general music classroom offerings, my students need 10 clarinets, 10 flutes, 10 trumpets, 7 trombones, and 5 percussion kits. These instruments will give 42 low income students the chance to say yes to participating in something bigger than themselves.
Your gift to our band will help students bring the music that is hidden inside of them out. This gift will give them something to focus on that does not revolve around a gang, or getting into some unknown trouble, or watching TV until all hours of the night. When budgets are failing everywhere, it is more important now than ever to make sure children have something to do that is extraordinary. This gift can give an entire family hope and something to look forward to. Your donation will start a child off in building skills that he or she can use to teach others: technical skills of a particular instrument, personal discipline, cooperation, and community contribution.
My students need 42 band instruments, including bells, trombones, flutes, trumpets, and clarinets.
Since you gave much has happened: I spoke to our school board on October 14, 2009 to raise the awareness of your efforts, and to raise the awareness of the importance of music education in our schools. Our band instruments arrived on October 15, 2009. The students that still needed instruments received them on October 20 due to our schedule. Locally, your efforts brought attention to our need, and helped us to win two more projects with Donors Choose: one project for 42 band books, and one project for 250 clarinet reeds.
My students are just beginning to play their first songs: Mary had a Little Lamb, Hot Cross Buns, and Go Tell Aunt Rhodie. Students are mastering reading their first 5 notes. They are working on correct posture, fingerings, tonguing (note separation), and embouchure (mouth placement on mouthpiece). And they are practicing at recess!
I have watched down hearted kids - those without instruments - turn into bright shining smiles and dispositions when the new instruments got into their hands. THANKS TO YOU! Many have worked very hard since Oct. 20 to catch up to the class, and not only did they catch up, but some surpassed other students that have had an instrument since Oct. 5.
Your gift will serve 42 students this year, and over 200 students in the next 5 years. This is an incredible gift. This was a unique request that came about in a miraculous way thanks to Adam Lambert, and all of his fans. Thank you for being so responsive to these children. They are just starting to make music at the 5th grade level, and they are joyful.
Personally, you all are amazing. Your heart toward this project and your love for Adam Lambert was the right combination at the right time. Thanks again.
With gratitude, Mrs. B.
Mrs. B. sent this note after the project was fully funded:
On August 18, 2009, I had resigned myself that this
project wasn't going to make it by the September 1 deadline for
donations. Many of you literally came to the rescue after seeing
Adam's YouTube request to send donations to school music and arts
programs, and in just about 6 days, you all raised $12,000 for this
project. THANK YOU! You have made dreams possible in tough economic
times. You have given a child opportunity for a new skill, a new
experience, and a new expectation in learning. I believe music
education is the synthesis of every academic subject, demanding the
thoughtfulness of writing, the emotional and logical response of
reading, the problem solving of math, the physical aptitude of an
athlete, and the inquisitiveness and absolute findings of a scientist.
Music helps us discover what our history might have sounded like, and
it helps us learn that we are all vital in our communities and
responsible to do our part within the community. YOU HAVE DONE YOUR
PART. Smiles and laughter to follow!
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I gave to this project because learning to create and express oneself through music and the arts is an essential part of a child's education. My children are fortunate to have a privately funded music program and the confidence they build and the pride they have when performing should not be a privileged but a right for all kids. Adam Lambert is our hometown hero not only for his achievements through our area's art programs, but also as an inspiration for giving back and supporting the programs that create opportunities for the next generation. I am proud to call myself Glambert #2284 and to help Adam Lambert support your school's music program."

I took up the piano at age 7, the violin at age 11, and the oboe and english horn at age 13. I had the most wonderful experiences playing in recitals, bands, orchestras, school and community musicals, and professional ensembles, with amazing and talented kids and adults. Playing an instrument will enrich your lives in ways you never dreamed! Happy Music Making."

"Adam Lambert lives his life with passion and enthusiasm. This carries over to his love and support and encouragement for children especially here where all of us can do great things....
You cannot get what you've never had unless you're willing to do what you've never done.
In life, it's that one extra degree of effort that separates the good from the great.
At 211 degrees, water is hot.
At 212 degrees, it boils.
And with boiling water comes steam.
And steam can power a locomotive.
The one extra degree makes all the difference.
Adam Lambert clearly has demonstrated this difference in his life and still does... "

"I gave to this project because I can't imagine how my life or the lives of the middle school students I have volunteered with in a local community orchestra would be different if we had not had the opportunity to find an instrument at your student's age. Exposing students to instruments in elementary school is so important and I believe that waiting until middle school only leads to fewer students entering the music program. Good luck with your project."

"Tell ADAM you are going to do right by this group of kids!!! How exciting! Soooo, close and 4 days to go. I can't tell you how excited I am on behalf of these kids. BTW: did I tell you 74% of my students are on free or reduced lunch? 25% will move several times this school year? Many parents don't speak English as their second language? And school is scheduled to start on August 31. THIS MATTERS! THANK YOU!! RAISE THEM UP! Thanks everybody!"

"Belonging to a group, like band, can give us many things that will help us as we grow into grown ups. This group belonging is also what motivates us to stay in school, and graduate. That's my hope for these kids, and you are the hands and feet of that hope. Thank you."

"I chose to help this cause because my daughter plays three instruments, so I know how important that feeling of accomplishment is in a child's life...Plus a friend of mine did me a huge favor and asked me to pass my gratitude to these kids instead of sending any money to her. Win/Win. :)"
