I have an eclectic group of young people in my legal studies class representing many religions, races and ethnic groups. I have students from 21 different regions, races or cultures.
Students in my class are 14-16 years old and just getting started in our wonderful law program.
We begin with law related speech class and we write opening statements, parole board hearings, reviews of laws and other topics in the news. The students are passionate and interested in what is going on in the world and society and they also care very much about legal issues and controversies. One of the biggest challenges is getting students to see that they have the talent and ability to become this next generation of police officers, judges, senators, lobbyists, advocates, mediators and Supreme Court justices.
My Project
What the World needs now.....is students to understand and study it. I am teaching World History this year and I would like my room to reflect the subject matter. Visuals like a World History timeline and a Buddha are almost universal in their approach to engage students and create reference points in the class that are informative and interesting.
Having some resource books for some of my students will allow them to pull out some additional material for projects, study and understanding.
While the textbook is helpful, supplemental materials are often essential for the reluctant or special needs learning. Having a classroom that reflects core content and materials to increase student understanding and content mastery can only lead to my students success.
