"World Drumming - what a great way to express yourself!
I teach K-5 music in a suburban school with a population that is adjusting to life with many different cultures.
As our community grows in number and ethnicity, I am searching for ways to make my students realize we have many commonalities in world music. Drumming gives us a chance to explore music from many cultures - Africa and India, just to name two.
I am requesting one drum at this time, but I plan to gradually add drums until I have a set of 10. This will allow me to rotate students through many different instruments in a drum circle. My picture features an activity we use to play world percussion instruments in a drum circle. Drum circles allow students to create (improvise) their own rhythms in conjunction with a group, so they evaluate their patterns to make sure they are adding to the group, not causing cacophony.
Adding djembes will give depth to performing as well. Many different sounds can be produced on djembes as well as incorporating movement and playing with partners.
When I have the drum circle set up, as students enter the classroom you can feel the excitement in the air. They love to play instruments and it is an activity where every student is engaged and doing his/her best.
With your help my students will get to experience a variety of different music styles, improvise and create their own music, and will continue to stay involved with music for their lifetime. Their love for music begins at an early age and we need to do everything possible to keep them focused as they grow older.
Thank you so much for allowing my students to enjoy this beautiful Djembe. It easily fills up the room with sound and has been a wonderful tool for keeping students playing together. The different sounds the drum makes helps students playing different rhythms play on cue if I am using the drum as a directing tool.
When the students use it, they rotate to get as many to the new drum as possible. All the students who have played it are surprised at how heavy it is, so learning to play it takes stamina! They also enjoy getting to play a "real" drum and not one that's made just for elementary music classrooms.
I truly appreciate your gift. It is making a difference daily by motivating students to stay involved and on task.
With gratitude, Mrs. W.
Mrs. W. sent this note after the project was fully funded:
Thank you so much for funding Jammin' Djembes! My students were very excited today when I told them we would be getting a full-size drum to learn African rhythms. They don't realize it yet, but having a full size drum will allow them to learn special techniques to get a variety of sounds from playing the drum in different ways. When combined with the hand drums, we will be reaching a new level of musicianship and excitement!
I also have had an influx of new students with a much wider ethnic background this year. I know starting the African drumming unit will hook them into music in a new school, and they will hopefully stay involved in music for a lifetime.
Thank you for sharing my passion for music and helping others find their passion.

"I donated because this kind of program is immensely valuable, and a lack of funds should not stop these kids from learning to express themselves. Thank you DonorsChoose, Adam Lambert and all the other fans for getting behind this cause!"
