My Kids Will FLIP for New Video Cameras

My students need two FLIP mini-camcorders and a Sunpak camcorder starter kit.

I have a wonderfully diverse group of third graders in my inner-city classroom, students from China, Vietnam, Mexico, Yemen, Latin America and the United States. Their family situations are as diverse as the students themselves: traditional nuclear families, single parent homes, multi-generational homes, foster care and even homelessness. One common thread among them is that most of my students’ parents have not graduated from high school and sadly, aside from cell phones, many of them do not have computers or other types of new technology at home. That makes it much more difficult to provide support when their children use technology in their school work. These kids are really funny. Since the school year began, they have huffed and puffed every time I have tried to video them with my digital camera. I can't tell you the amount of times I heard, "Can we make a video too?" Well, one day I finally gave in. One of my particularly uninspired students asked me very politely if he could use my camera to make a video of his reading group and I couldn’t resist. The result was quite successful, but only after a lot of trial and error due to the clumsy nature of my outdated camera. Economical FLIP mini-camcorders are the solution. They are not only affordable, but easy to use as well. I feel strongly that videoing themselves as they learn can only serve to help build my students’ self-confidence. Allowing them to use these cameras will help them keep their own records of what they are learning by documenting writing projects and videoing their oral presentations of poems, reader's theater, and other activities. Students become easily bored during “traditional” class work, but if they are able to video themselves doing these activities, that just may be enough to motivate them to go beyond the ordinary. Please help my students by providing them with FLIP digital cameras so they can incorporate this brilliant technology into their learning. These cameras will allow my students to film themselves as they create activities and projects in all academic areas – and even just for fun.
